If this is impromptu commentary, it is all the more amazing as a deep reflection on this problem. B16 shows clearly his power to be compassionate without being soft on a hard teaching.

His reflection on the essential dimension of suffering in the Christian life is profound and universal. It is precisely the modern rejection of Christian suffering that has given us Gene Robinson, easy divorce and remarriage and the entire list of grievances of Call to Action.

B16 has found a way to be utterly human/humane while holding fast to the hard teachings of Christ.
